With the economy the way it has been, saving money may have been the last thing on your mind in 2010. Make this year different by practicing simple habits that may make it easier to keep some of your funds in your bank account.
Find cheap entertainment
Entertainment can eat up cash quickly over time. One movie a week at the theater can add up over the course of a year. Consider relying on your local library to provide you with music, movies, and books. You'd be surprised how up to date their selections are. Board games, puzzles, and cards are also great ways to spend time with loved ones.
Fix before you replace
If you have items that you throw away every time there is a hole or crack, you may want to think twice. Some items can be easily fixed if you put in a little effort and will have your item like new in no time. Replacing these items without attempting to fix them will cost you more in the long run.
Buy used
There are many used items that are still in good condition for you to purchase. They will fulfill the same purpose as the new one and cost you much less. This can range from cars to clothes to anything you can possibly imagine thanks to eBay.
Eliminate unnecessary bills
If you have high priced cable or a landscaper, consider going without these services for a year, or purchase a lower cable package to lessen expenses. This goes for subscriptions as well. Many magazines and newspapers have their own online versions of their content for free. Stopping subscriptions could save a few dollars too.
Focus on reducing debt
For most of us, there are some bills we cannot eliminate and most are collecting interest. Before you save, focus on creating a plan to manage any loans, credit cards, or mortgages that have outstanding balances. Try to pay these items off as quickly as possible to keep from paying more interest, which is money down the drain.
With a new year comes a new reflection on life. Why not make your financial situation better and be prepared for unexpected events by having money saved.
